First published in 1667, John Miltonís epic poem Paradise Lost is considered the greatest retelling of the story of the Fallen Angel Lucifer and his decent into Hell to become the devil Satan. In 1983 Peter Ellenshaw created production illustrations for a film based on the poem as he began development to turn the biblical classic into a major film for Stanley Kubrick. The works of the English artist William Blake (1757-1827) and Frenchman Gustave Dore (1832-1883) clearly influenced these works.
